Guide for Batman: Arkham City (2024)

Greetings all, and welcome to Batman: Arkham City walkthrough! Though not an overly difficult game, those who played and completed the original Batman: Arkham Asylum will soon realize that this game is a lot more involved and will take a fair bit more of your patience. Most of the achievements can be obtained quite simply but skill will be envolved on a few of them. Mainly in the Riddler's Revenge section of the game and to get some of the sidequests and Riddler Trophies. Overall you will only be required to play through the game twice. The bulk of your time will be spent doing the Riddler's Revenge challenges and even more so if you have any of the DLC. Overall I give the game's difficulty a 6 out of 10 or so based on Riddler's Revenge, but it is imperative that you master the use of your gadgets and how the freeflow combat works. There is only one missable achievement in the game and there are no multiplayer achievements, so are you ready? Here's what you're looking to do when you start the game:

New Game

This playthrough will see you obtain most of this game's achievements and can be completed as leisurely as you wish since it is not too difficult. Most of the achievements will fall into your lap just by playing and enjoying the game; however, you must play the game on at least Normal difficulty. Playing on Easy will not allow you to start a New Game Plus upon completion of the main campaign and you need to complete New Game Plus to be able to complete everything. Beating the game unlocks the aforementioned New Game Plus mode and allows you to free roam through Arkham City so you can complete any sidequests/Riddler shenanigans you may have left unattended as well as allowing you to don any DLC costumes you might have purchased.

New Game Plus

This is where the game can start getting a little hairy even though the real challenge is still in store for you. This mode is essentially "Very Hard" mode but carries over all of your gadgets and upgrades as well as every Riddle you have solved or Trophy you have found. I will go into more detail about this mode within the guide but the main thing you need to focus on is beating this mode in addition to the sidequests (again) as they must be completed for the game's final achievement.

Mop-Up and Riddler's Revenge

Now the game gets interesting! In case you haven't done so in your previous campaigns, now is the time to go back to your original Normal campaign and finish all of the Riddles that are littered around Arkham City (you can also clean up on your New Game Plus file since it shares between both campaigns, but who needs the extra challenge, am I right?). Not only will this enable you to complete the Riddler's sidequest seeing as it is by far the most involved of the 12 sidequests, but it will also unlock the challenge maps that you need in order to complete Riddler's Revenge. There are 400 Riddles total (440 if you include Catwoman's DLC) comprised of trophies, actual riddles, breakable objects, and physical challenges. Some can be tricky but are very rewarding to find on your own, though there are now guides available and the Riddler Henchmen help immensely by placing icons on the map once they have been interrogated.

All of this leads up to the previously mentioned Riddler's Revenge mode. Frustration, light hemorrhaging, and incontinence are all associated side effects of completing all of these challenges if you are the slightest bit unfamiliar with Batman's badassery and as such is why this portion of the game is best left for last. There are 12 Combat, 12 Predator, and 12 Campaign challenges for you to not only complete but to obtain every medal on. Again this is only as difficult as you are skilled at the gameplay mechanics. If you went through the game just taking bullets like a man and spamming the X button you will give up on this mode sooner rather than later. If you took the time to really feel out all of the different nuances of combat and taking out enemies in general; however, you will thoroughly enjoy this mode and may even contemplate becoming an animal-themed vigilante yourself.

DLC

At of the time of this writing there are three other playable characters that are available by buying the game new or purchasing the content online--Catwoman, Robin, and Nightwing. 4 of Catwoman's 6 achievements are incorporated into the main game while her remaining achievements can be obtained in Riddler's Revenge alongside Robin and Nightwing's achievements. Now you guys understand why you will be spending so much damn time in Riddler's Revenge...

There is also Harley's revenge to playthrough. All in all if you have all of the DLC it will keep you busy for a while.

You will find that at the time of completing this walkthrough that there is no inclusion of the Robin or Nightwing DLC, this is due to me not owning them. However the achievements are simply linked to the Riddler Combat, Predator and Campaign challenges and hopefully another author can fill in the remaining information (inquire in the forums).
